I started my quest to be #FitAt50 during my holiday break. There were no distractions like work and commuting to keep me from making it to the gym and satisfying my inner school kid yearning for a gold star – or in the case of FitBit, the digital celebration on my wrist when my daily step goals were met.
Now that vacation is over and the reality of a normal work week has set in again, I have realized that making time to feed the FitBit is going to be more of a challenge.
Case in point: I had my first appointment with my trainer yesterday morning at 7 AM. We spent an hour stretching, pulling, pushing and isolating muscles. When it was all said and done, I definitely felt like I had challenged my body but there wasn’t enough movement to make a dent in my daily goal of 10,000 steps! And I had to get to work soon after!
So during conference calls, I paced in circles. Still not enough. I took a mental note of my plans and realized there was nothing involving walking very far. There was nothing I needed from the grocery store. I even considered driving to IKEA just to walk the maze. Did I mention it was FREEZING out?
I ended up going for a walk. Yes, a WALK. By myself. All the while watching my FitBit to be sure I was going far enough to achieve my daily steps. I hit it right as I was heading down the hill to my house and honestly, it felt almost as good as coming home with a gold star from Sister Mary on my homework when I was a kid.
To say I am loving my FitBit is an understatement. I love the data it provides as it sheds light on how little one has to move to get things done in this digital age. So far, it is the perfect digital nanny to keep me focused on my goals. I’m not sure that even my mother would have been able to get my ass in gear to go for a walk in 25-degree weather!
